Kakadu Plum is a small native Australian fruit and one of the most extraordinary botanical ingredients in the world. Growing wild across the tropical woodlands of northern Australia -
including Arnhem Land, the Kimberley, and the Northern Territory. It has been
harvested and used by First Nations Australians for thousands of years as both food and medicine. Also known as gubinge, green plum, or billy goat plum, it is harvested wild from ancient savanna trees and remains deeply significant to the communities who have tended this land for generations.
We acknowledge the traditional custodians of the lands on which Kakadu Plum is harvested, and the knowledge they carry about the care and use of this plant.
The science behind the ingredient
What makes Kakadu Plum scientifically remarkable is its Vitamin C content. It contains up to 3,000–5,300mg of Vitamin C per 100g of fruit, making it the world's richest known natural source, with up to 100 times more Vitamin C than an orange. This extraordinary concentration is a direct result of the plant evolving under some of the harshest UV conditions on earth, producing protective phyto-compounds at levels found nowhere else in nature.
Beyond Vitamin C, Kakadu Plum is rich in gallic acid, ellagic acid, ellagitannins, flavonoids, and lutein - a complex of polyphenols that work together to help protect skin from oxidative stress, calm the appearance of redness, and promote a clearer, more even-looking complexion.
Why it's used in Skincare and Wellness
In skincare, Vitamin C is one of the most well researched brightening and skin-supporting actives available. Applied topically, formulas containing Vitamin C are associated with a more radiant looking complexion, the appearance of reduced fine lines, and improved-looking skin tone over consistent use.
When consumed as part of a food or wellness formula, Kakadu Plum's exceptional Vitamin C content contributes to normal collagen formation - Vitamin C is an essential nutrient for the body's
own collagen synthesis and provides antioxidant activity that helps protect
cells from oxidative stress.

The research
Study - Photoprotective potential (2025, ScienceDirect)
A first of its kind scoping review published in 2025, examining 31 studies across MEDLINE, PubMed, Embase, Scopus, and Google Scholar, investigated Kakadu Plum's potential as a topical
photoprotective ingredient. The review identified that Kakadu Plum has high
phenolic content, potent antioxidant activity, and anti-inflammatory compounds through multiple mechanisms, all relevant to protecting the visible appearance of skin from environmental stressors. It also noted that Vitamin C, present in Kakadu Plum at exceptional concentrations, is a recognised co-factor in the body's normal collagen synthesis process.
